As we reported last month, work had recently begun on the proposed new "descent line" at staunburn. With the trail been built by the same superb contractors that built the loops at dalby, the trail has shot up in double quick time and is now open to the public and ready to ride!! With the trail been right on our doorstep, we of course didnt hesitate to go try it out!

Before i start, i'd like to make it clear that although the trail is now open to the public, it is far from finsihed. The contractor has built the bulk of the trail however over the next few dig days, once we have all had chance to ride it, many improvments, adjustments and additions will be made to the trail. Click the still below for the helmet cam footage:
- The trail runs down the far west side of the hill, to get to it you need to ride the red loop climb and then hang a left just before you get to the top. It starts in the woods, running through tight trees and sharp corners. this section is all about controlling your speed, braking before the corner, trying not to lock up, spotting your line and then hitting the gas through it. Theres no berms to help you out although there are ruts forming. I found it best to try and stick to the inside on most though as its quite loose where people have been skidding. Once your through the tight corners, still in the woods theres a few nice fast no brake corners with little jumps between them. - Once you leave the woods and into the felled area, its flat out along a short straight and nail straight into an awesome 90deg berm which flings you into a long bolder garden, stay off the brakes for it and hit the berm with all the speed you can as you'll need it for the immediate bolders! Few pedal kicks through the bolders and its into more rocks with sharp tight corners, a bit more pedal kicking is required. This section is quite slow and certainley very challenging to ride through fast. - Now its onto the faster stuff. Pedal away from the last tight corner and your straight into the biggest drop on track - a 6ft drop off of a bolder onto a nice downslope and straight into another smaller drop. Make sure your in the right gear and crank as hard as you can if you want to huck it! Rolling is an option, or you can take the chicken run to the right (which is even more difficult IMO)!! - From here on in you can go into deathgrip mode and start sprinting for the long sweeping berms. I count 12 berms in total, some switching back into each other, crossing the stream several times. Thers a few jumps, drops and rocks thrown in between them all of course aswell. - Once you reach the end, pull over, put your saddle back up and roll straight onto the black climb back to the top and do it all again!! All in all i think Clixxbys (the contractor) couldnt have done a better job, making use of what is a very limited gradient and adding yet another superb trail to stainburns growing collection! Cheers to all involved, of course special thanks have to go to every one at singletraction and the FE for making it happen. Cheers! |
